2 Overview
Tiwi Islands Aboriginal Cutural Full Day Tour Departs from Darwin
Tiwi Islands
A part of the Northern Territory, just 80 kilometres north off the coast of Darwin, are the wonderful Tiwi Islands. Voted as one of the top 100 things to do before you die by Australian Traveller in 2011, a short scenic flight from Darwin will allow you to experience life in a modern day Aboriginal community. This is an absolute must-do on any Top End adventure.
The Tiwi Islands comprise of Melville Island, Bathurst Island and nine smaller uninhabited islands, with a combined population of less than 3000. The Tiwi people, translated in the local Aboriginal language as 'we' people, are culturally and linguistically unique from those just across the water in Arnhem Land.
Highlights
- Take a 2.5-hour cruise aboard the Tiwi Mantawi to Bathurst Island. You'll be met by your local guide and taken on a journey through the progressive, modern day Aboriginal community of Wurrumiyanga
- Visit the Tiwi Museum with its interesting displays of traditional art and depictions of the Tiwi 'dreamtime' stories, and Early Mission Precinct and its unique Tiwi-style Catholic Church
- Spend time with some Tiwi Ladies while they work on their weaving and painting. Your guides and the ladies also demonstrate their totem dances and perform a smoking ceremony to bless the visitors and explain the meanings behind them
- You'll get the chance to sample local billy tea and damper with your lunch
- Visit the successful Arts & Crafts Centres and see where the artists work. You also can purchase Tiwi arts and crafts and screen-printed fabric at Island prices
