What to bring/wear ● Comfortable enclosed, flat and comfortable walking shoes. High heels are not permitted on the museum's vessels. Open-toed shoes, sandals and thongs are discouraged.
● Protective clothing, hat, sunscreen lotion, and sunglasses
Other info ● Adults are not permitted to carry infants and children in arms on the vessels for personal safety reasons.
● Smoking, food, beverages and videography are not permitted on board any vessel or in the lighthouse.
● Photography and cameras are permitted on board vessels and in the lighthouse.
● Large bags should be deposited at the Museum's cloakroom before boarding or visiting the lighthouse and vessels. Cloakroom service is provided free of charge.
● Children must be at least 90cm in height to board HMB Endeavour replica, submarine HMAS Onslow and some visiting vessels (ask at the ticket desk regarding visiting vessels upon arrival).
● Children 12 years and under must be accompanied by an adult when boarding the vessels.
● Last boarding times and vessel availability are subject to change without notice
● Sometimes the Museum may need to temporarily close areas/vessels for maintenance, improvements or safety reasons. Please check with the Museum for updated information before travel.
● For visitor safety, when the temperature reaches 36° Celsius all vessels will be closed. If it looks like a it's going to be a hot day, come early and see the vessels first. Check with the Museum friendly staff if you're unsure. If extreme wet weather hits, all vessels will be closed for visitor safety. If it's looking like a rainy day, check with the Museum staff. There's still lots of amazing things to enjoy inside the museum though, so don't let rain stop you from visiting!

The Australian National Maritime Museum is Australia's national centre for maritime collections, exhibitions, research and archaeology. The museum presents a changing program of stimulating exhibitions and events to share Australia's maritime history and connect the stories, objects, people and places that are part of the country's narrative. The Museum welcomes over 850,000 visitors annually including families, interstate and international tourists. Over 13,000 members support the museum and regularly enjoy special events and activities.

The knowledgeable guides will help you unearth the stories of Australia's maritime past and present, bringing to life the stories behind the many fascinating objects housed around the museum and on the spectacular vessels. A range of tours are on offer to suit all ages, interests and amount of time you have free to explore. However, tours are subject to availability so make sure to check what's available when you arrive at the museum so you don't miss out.

  • Behind the Scenes

    Learn about the changing history of Darling Harbour, see the conservation laboratory, ship model workshop and marvel at the large open plan storage spaces which house over 100,000 objects rarely seen on public display.

    This is an exciting chance to hear from expert guides about the inner workings of the Sydney Heritage Fleet and the Australian National Maritime Museum.

  • HMAS Vampire Tour 

    Climb aboard the HMAS Vampire, Australia's largest museum vessel and the last of the country's big gun ships. Many of the volunteers who run this tour are ex-Navy and love sharing their own experiences of life aboard a RAN vessel. Enjoy this truly unique opportunity to explore a real ex-navy destroyer and find out about the lives of the sailors who worked aboard this ship in a fascinating 45-minute tour.

  • Meet the Fleet Tour

    Join one of the knowledgeable volunteers on a tour which could include Akarana, Carpentaria, MB 172 Epic Lass, John Louis, Kathleen Gillett, Krait, Thistle, and Tu Do. Note: the tours are conducted from the pontoons, not on board.

Action Stations

Action Stations is an exciting new way to experience the compelling history of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Explore the danger and drama of military life at sea through a hi-tech and immersive journey that shows the inner workings of the Navy like never before. This exhibition reinterprets and enlivens our much-loved ex-RAN vessels: HMAS Vampire (Daring class destroyer) HMAS Onslow (Oberon class submarine) and HMAS Advance (Attack class patrol boat).

Please note: HMAS Onslow, HMAS Advance and below deck on HMAS Vampire are temporarily closed due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The curated program of ocean and nature-inspired movies from internationally-respected filmmakers complement current museum exhibitions. Covering everything from great white sharks, mysterious marine creatures, submersible journeys to the deepest point of the sea and experiencing the flight of soaring migratory birds, these films delight and entertain. Escape the everyday and see the world through a new lens!
